Realizing the Movement: When a Book Became Something Bigger
A couple of weeks after my book was released, I did a Google search of the book hashtag, #TheRebalancingAct, to see what chatter was out there. The response I got said The Rebalancing Act was “a book and a movement that explores the challenges working women face in achieving balance in their lives.” The words ‘and a movement’ really hit me! I knew I was creating something bigger than a book, and bigger than just me. These are conversations we need to encourage now more than ever, and I am glad this movement is catching on!

Staying Grounded
I never take myself too seriously and try to laugh as often as possible. My success is not about me, and I never, ever want to get a big ego about it. I believe I am – finally – doing the work the Lord intended me to do, and I am letting my faith in Him guide my steps. I will never take this for granted, and I believe having faith in something larger than myself is a huge part of staying grounded. Remaining humble and recognizing that I still make dumb mistakes, am far from perfect, and can be a goofball is also helpful! When things don’t go my way, I repeat to myself ‘this too shall pass,’ try to look at setbacks in a broader perspective, and avoid staying down for too long. Sure, it is important to acknowledge these times, but I don’t want to feel sorry for myself for more than a few hours. I think my problem-solving nature helps me move on in those moments. Also, I think it is crucial to own and acknowledge when I do make a mistake. Even though this seems counterintuitive to some, I know that owning my mistakes adds to trust and credibility. It’s never good to try to cover up a mistake. People are smarter than that, and trying to cover up mistakes detracts from trust a lot. Lastly, I try to always bring humanity and a real-life perspective into my work. Sure, I want to do my best and present myself well, but I choose to lead with authenticity, and for me, that looks like letting go of being so formal and polished that people can’t relate to me. I would exhaust myself quickly if I tried to do that!

Taking the Leap
My boldest move was stepping out of the security of a corporate executive role into the new, uncharted waters of becoming an author and pursuing my dream of becoming a transformational speaker. It’s been a period of great learning and growth, along with discomfort from being out of my comfort zone, and also a lesson in patience. If this were easy, everyone would be doing it. I have never been so convicted that I am on the right path, even though I don’t know exactly where it’s leading me. And I wouldn’t trade this journey I’m on for any corporate job, so I guess this was the right bold move for me!
